I bought the hard maple bridge inserts sold by Beard Guitars (http://
www.beardguitars.com/bridgeinserts.html). An easy and fast
transaction - called them up over the phone, paid with my credit
card, and they arrived within the week.
When they arrived, I cut them down to roughly match the height of the
existing bridge inserts (which, by the way, appeared to be made of
balsa wood). I took the guitar apart, noting how the cover, spider
and cone were aligned to the body by putting a little piece of tape
in the same location on each item. Then I carefully sanded the bridge
inserts until I could get them to fit into the spider's slot. You
have to take your time - they don't call it HARD maple for nothing.
It was a tight fit when I was done, but the bottom of the insert was
touching the bottom of the slot in the spider. When finished, I put
everything back together, restrung the guitar, and listened to my
wife ask me to close the door so she could hear the TV.
It made a big difference in the "punch" of individual notes and the
overall tone of the guitar. I'd say it's brighter, louder and
tighter than before.
Overall it's a big improvement for a $5.00 investment in material and
a couple hours of work. Like I said, I took my time. Someone who
knows more about what they're doing than I do would probably get it
done within an hour.
