For what it's worth, I also played with the adjustment screw on my anonymous
"Blankey" (that's what it's got on the headstock) to try to adjust a buzz
that was appearing sometimes. Tightening it less than 1/4 turn did very
little, so I slackened it from its original position (counterclockwise) by a
little less than 1/4 turn, and the buzzes went away. The sound is now clear
and (dare I say) resonant.
Restringing with D'Addario phosphor bronze, and putting an 016 on the top
string completed the makeover. I have a maple bridge on order from Beard - I
shall be interested to see what this does.
I've been recording myself, and though the playing is less than stellar, the
tonal quality is now great, and has led listeners to ask "Who's playing?
Where was this recorded??" Then they hear the bum notes and slack timing and
they know it's me.
I don't know if it's of any interest to anyone, but I've found a mic/pre-amp
combination that works really well for recording. I use a Red5 Audio RV5
plugged into a dbx miniPre, with the mic placed about 6" above the edge of
the hubcap at about the 2 o'clock position (with the neck at 9 o'clock and
tailpiece at 3). I am sure there are other small-diaphragm condensers out
there that would do the job just as well, but this combo suits my tastes.
I'll send the link of an MP3 recorded in this way to anyone who's
interested.
