Wayne, I'm not a luthier, but, MY experience is this:
Once I had the bridges cut right (WAY TALLER THAN LOCAL LUTHIER HACKS), n I
bought my most and best from Beard, <grin> MY import rang louder and better that
any other modification, so far.
I don't think, runnin yer strings over or under, will have ANY similar impact on
yer downward pressure on the cone.
Cuz, I did that, n the recent change in bridge height blew away ANY differences
that runnin my strings over or under did.
Now, the length and the DENSITY of yer tail piece, well, that's another
experiment, I haven't done yet . . . . but that downward pressure on the cone
from the bridge heighth is TOTALLY essentially, to get right . . . . .
Check the heighth of yer stings, and measure out the heighth of yer nut and
bridges . . . if it's all low, I bet, yer downward pressure ain't what it's
supposed to be . . . . . ;-)
I'll let others reply n tell ya more proper . . . ;-)
