"The Reso was strung with a standard fan shaped tail piece but the strings
were strung UNDERNEATH the lip. [SNIP] Has anyone out there tried this? It
would seem to me that this setup would apply more than 'normal' pressure on the
bridge..."
=> Yup. Been there, done that. There's discussion of this in the archives, not
recently, but some time ago. Some people do it, but I believe the consensus is
probably that it's better to string in the conventional fashion, unless for
some reason you have bridge inserts that are cut too low.
There was a time, some years back, when folks were stringing under the
bridge, installing extra high palmrests and extra-tall bridge inserts to try to
get more downward pressure on the cone, thinking it would increase volume.
Charlie Campbell pointed out that the cone has to flex both up and down, and
too MUCH downward pressure can actually kill volume. You get the same effect by
overtightening the tension screw.
I've tried both ways, but I continue to run the strings over the top in
conventional fashion. Some have accused me of being over the top all the time.
