I remember that quote
from Pete Seeger very clearly. I not only thought it was cleaver and funny, but I
also took it to heart.... for the longest time I basked in my
ignorance, feeling that "playing by ear" was cool, and macho... music theory was
lame. What an idiot! It wasn't until I was in my 50's that I finally wised up and
learned the basics (not all that much, actually). It has helped immensely, and I
could kick myself for waiting so long.
I guess the moral is "knowing
something... anything... almost never hurts, and may help alot".
