Actual lemon oil is acidic and can damage the frets. Of course, most lemon
oil is just scented petroleum distillates, which over time can damage the
finish and loosen inlays. It also collects dirt. It does not "moisturize"
or replace "natural oils" in the wood.
As with most things, moderation is a virtue. If you *must* use something,
use it sparingly and wipe off the excess immediately. Don't reapply more
than once per year.
Strangely enough, the urge to use furniture polish is largely limited to the
U.S. and Canada. I suppose the same motivation is at work WRT fingerboard
treatments.
