Hi Dick and fellow listers,
Wow on your thoughts for a roller nut Dick! I know less than nothing about
instrument design, altho as a retired appliance tech., I'm familiar with tools
and know which end of the wrench is used to drive da nail, etc. I'm also
familiar with roller nuts from my Steel Guitar days, because my Emmons dbl 10,
and even the mid '40's single neck six string Multikord I have has a roller nut.
I wonder about the advantages with regard to a Reso-guitar tho? Except for the
occasional 4th string binding in the nut when I try to swap to a G6th in the
middle of a tune, (and this is usually cured by burnishing the nut with the new
strings whenever I change them, as well as a little pencil lead/graphite in the
string slot), I'd almost think a roller nut wouldn't be worth the trouble to
manufacture, or the expense......unless you're planning to use some kind of
"Hipshot" string bender device and be constantly changing string pitch?
The discussion we're currently haveing with regard to the different materials
for bridge inserts and nuts, is of great interest to me however. The carbon
fibre material sounds promising, and on the old Sho-Bros, Shot Jackson actually
used a metal nut on the sq. neck instruments. I know because I replaced one of
these things, with a bone nut on my favorite Sho-Bro, "Sadie". It was a crudely
built chrome plated thing with huge slots that the strings, I felt, could
actually rattle around from side to side. I don't miss it a bit, nor does
"Sadie"!
Keep us posted on your thoughts Dick, and your observations. I certainly
appreciate your input, and I'm sure the majority of the listers do as well. I'd
heard that St. Mike used either hard maple or birch inserts and didn't prefer the
ebony capped bridges that so many of us use today.
I'm wondering if haveing a louder instrument is actually to my advantage tho?
Whenever I hit a wrong note.......it's OBVIOUS that "somethin' ain't quite right"
over in Richie's corner, where if I had a softer guitar.......I could frown in
Larue's direction and folks would think the "left coast" had messed up
again......<HUGE GRINS>!!! That's not an original "Richie Idea" tho.....I heard
Jeff Newman the great Steel Guitar Instructor say once that whenever he hit a
wrong note......he used to frown and give the Bass Player a dirty
look.........this helpful hint has worked for me ever since!!
I LOVE THIS LIST!!
