Mandolin orchestras still exist today. In fact, I play mandobass in the
Baltimore Mandolin Orchestra ( http://baltimoremandolinorchestra.org ).
Mandolin orchestras do cheat and carry a guitar section. And many of them use
bass fiddles rather than mandobasses.
