==>Tradition I suspect, and, customer demand.  Maybe Dick, Gregg and 
others will chime in.  Many players, including myself prefer the look of 
quality rosewood and ebony fretboards with traditional frets.  Players 
still like to specify inlay patterns in the traditional style.  It's all 
part of the craft.

Some luthiers also build round and square neck reso guitars side by 
side.  I'm sure it's more practical to offer similar treatments.
