July 1991. Lowell MA.
The Lowell Folk Festivel had started its annual weekend run in our fair
city, and I was going with my friends to the Friday evening show. In those
days the opening show was held on the South Common, but torrential rains
that evening moved it indoors to the Memorial Auditorium on East Merrimack
St. A few of us had walked several blocks to the Auditorium from a
friend's apartment, and we found good seats in the balcony right above the
stage. My hair was dripping wet, and my glasses kept fogging up, making it
difficult for me to see clearly.
On the program was singer/guitarist Peter Rowan accompanied by Jerry
Douglas on the dobro. Now I had heard of the dobro (Flatt and Scrugg's
"When Papa Played the Dobro"), and was aware that there was such a thing as
lapstyle playing, but had never thought about it much. This was the first
time I had never actually seen one played, and when JD started to work his
dobro magic, I was completely floored. I kept wiping my glasses and
straining to see. I thought, "This can't be real; it must be a trick.
I'll bet there's another musician behind the stage playing along." In
short, he stole the entire show as far as I was concerned.
I eventually got around to getting a resonphonic guitar and taking a few
lessons to learn this lapstyle thing. Now when I listen to JD, it's with a
new understanding of how it's done. Now I listen and think, "This can't be
real; it must be a trick."
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Happy New Year, all!

An interesting "thread" might be, "Where (or when even), did you FIRST
become aware of Hawaiian, or playing with a steel, style playing?"
