There is probably really no need to oil fretboards on
resos. Or to put a finish on the guitar, either. But
oil (I use boiled linseed oil on the guitars I make)
seals the wood to prevent accidental moisture like
rain or beer from soaking into the wood and staining
it. Oil darkens the wood, making it more attractive,
without making it shiny, which could be distracting.
A hardening oil like boiled linseed, watco danish,
minwax, etc., will also make the wood a bit harder,
and provide a bit more durability, if your hand makes
contact with it - not usually a problem with
lap-played resos.
