In general, fingerboards are unfinished. They are subject to over
drying and can split. Oiling a finished surface doesn't do anything
much, but unfinished wood (such as fingerboards) benefit from it. As I
posted earlier, walnut oil is popular (as is "lemon oil"). It helps
maintain a nice color on both rosewood and ebony.
