Hi John,
There are many so better qualified than me to attempt to answer this intonation
question, and I'm sure Dewey Slide Well and Dick DeNeve will come back with much
better answers, but, I think the way the guitar is tuned, or to be more precise,
what tuning is used, has a lot to do with the way the intonation affects the
function of the instrument.
I mainly tune my reso's to the "G Major" tuning, from lo to hi, GBDGBD, and I
tune both B strings a little flat..........mainly because one time I heard Mike
Auldridge say to do it! That was good enough for me!!!!!!
On the other hand, when I was playing Pedal Steel, I think it was Jeff Newman, a
great steel guitar instructor now sadly deceased, who'd first worked out an
elaborate "tempered tuning" system using the then new Korg tuner, that would
compensate for the peculiarities of the E 9th tuning and the various changes
caused by the floor pedals and the knee bars that this instrument used.
I've seen individual instruments that have the bridge filed to one side or the
other, to compensate for an individual string.....seen this ona banjo one time if
memory serves me right.
Now I'll hide under da bar and let the QUALIFIED list members speak......lol.

ps.....oh and with regard to that pretty DeNeve somone has listed on E-Bay? I'm
resisting all "crazy impulses" here, mainly because I already am the proud owner
of one of Dick's instruments. I swear, that internal brace Dick uses, (I'm told
his early guitars used a piece of electrical conduit, and the later instruments
like mine, have this carbon fibre rod, running from the neck block, thru the
soundwell and under the cone, to the end block)......I SWEAR I CAN TELL THE
DIFFERENCE between my "Blackie" and my other instruments that do not have this
feature.
DeNeve guitars are just so STABLE! You tune em and they stay there!
