Ooooookay Larue, and fellow listers,
Going thru emails here and just read the ones on hearing loss, and it's effect
on musicians, and sound engineers in particular. As many of you might be aware,
I played the dbl barreled egg slicer for too many years in too many bars,
lounges, pubs, V.F.W.s, American Legions, Moose clubs, Eagles, Elks, you name it,
I've been there. Major second hand smoke survivor here!!!
I also (so far, thank you Lord), survived a NASTY little episode of something
the Dr. called a classic (that's me for sure) case of "Sudden Deaf Syndrome".
The symptom was a sudden COMPLETE LOSS of hearing in my left ear. Woke up one
morning, made a phone call, always use left ear for phone conversations, and
thought the phone was outa whack! After trying another phone, it dawned on me
that I was the one "outa whack" and the phone was fine!! You talk about an
attention getter!!! Loving music as I do, and I'm sure you all understand where
I'm coming from on this.....I came close to panic! Anyways I got to a hearing
specialist real quick and got on Prednisone, and it worked like magic. Ear came
back online in about a week, and has been fine ever since. This all happened
about seven years ago......
My point friends, is please..... take care of your hearing! I was told we live
in a noisy world and hearing loss is the result of cumulative damage! Useing ear
plugs today could save your hearing tomorrow....I for one am NOT looking forward
to listening to the world around me thru tiny transistor powered devices. So
far, I've managed, with the help of a sympatico bluegrass loving, mando playing,
hearing Dr., to avoid this. Of course I've been here now for over 70 yrs., but
with God, and the Dr's help......I'm optimistic!
Now with regards to reso content, I thought I saw in a previous email Larue,
that you were weighing your hearing abilities, vs. upgrading an instrument or
purchasing a new instrument even? My position on that still stands firm! I
always have as many instruments around as I can get my grubby little hands on!!
They're to me, like "money in da bank" and they're a lot more FUN than if the
money actually WAS in the bank......which it probably wouldn't be anyways!!! I
also get them upgraded to the best of my ability. Don't know how many of the
list is into hi-performance race cars, but if there was a way to hook up a
Nitrous Oxide cylinder to a Sho-Bro, I'd be first in
line..........hmmmm..........I wonder???
Or.......I'm waiting for Dick DeNeve to figure out how to put a small solar
panel in one screenhole and a little speaker in the other.....what say you
Richard???
I love the suggestion of using Fast Fret to......."illuminate" the ojnab player
tho! WD-40 has the same effect, (major flamethrower), and is more readily
available, etc. etc.
Back to reading the rest of my emails,
Richie Chiasson
Salem, N.H.
(the "other" Larue 'cept I'm on the RIGHT coast!!!)
