Well the GHS 1600s were "muffled" or I guess "Stifled" would be a better
word on the stock bridge. You just knew the tone was aching to come out of
there but just couldn't make it. Ken told me that those nickel GHS 1600s
had a rep for being "dead" right out of the package. And after an
unsuccessful attempt to hijack a set of J-42s out of him at Pearl Jam last
weekend I ordered a few sets. I forget which one now but Dewey or Richard
suggested the FT-13s with the caveat that they don't last as long as the
J-42s but sounded great as long as they last so I also ordered 3 sets of
those too.
I was not about to put those GHS strings back on after the bridge swap out
so I flipped a coin. The FT-13s won the toss. So short story long winded.
I have no idea. which did the trick and I don't care. The difference is
nothing short of phenomenal!!
As for slotting, the stock insert just had slits except for the 6th string
and I suspect that the wood was soft enough that the strings just hogged out
their own slot. The new Bear Maple / Ebony is appropriately slotted for the
different string gauges.
One thing is that I have an ever so slight buzz / hum on the 3rd and 4th
strings, not really enough to be irritating but there none the less. I
suspect it's the string slots. After I quit going gah, gah over the sound
improvement most likely I'll hit the bridge a lick or two with a jewelers
file. Or maybe they will "play in" by themselves time will tell.
