The buzz / hum is so slight that you really had to listen to it. I say had
as I just took another 1/8th turn on the tension screw and it's gone. If it
aint these old ears can't hear it.
One of the things I did when I had it completely apart was check that the
spider was level ( it was) and that the cone sat flush over the soundwell
(it did). Now that it's all together and I've been playing it all evening I
am not going to tear that thing down again for a long while.
A friend of mine has a Johnson and it's a hoss of a guitar. In fact when I
went shopping I was going to buy the Johnson Nashville Slide but they don't
make it anymore. None anywhere in the country either, anywhere. So I
settled for the Regal R-45 in Mahogany.
Doing the work really was not difficult. I followed the instructions that
were posted here and sent to me offlist and followed them to the letter. I
used a 220 grit silicon carbide paper for the sanding and it was a snap. I
did maybe three sand and fit trys before it slipped in and discovered they
were too tall. Marked the difference clamped them in a vice and took a
fine blade coping saw to them. Sanded a bit again and slid them in. I
guess the whole process took two hours. And GAWD what a difference!! It
really is sweet.
I wrote to Silvio Ferreti of Scorpion bridge fame over this week and he is
going to put together a couple of sets of Timeless Timber and Blood wood
inserts for me. Now those should be interesting. But in the meantime I am
ecstatic over the results of this project.
