I have also gone to a couple of the kamps for
flatpicking guitar and Rob's comments were accurate
outside of the cost factor. I really felt that you
got far more than you paid for in the sessions.
Kampers are immersed in music with jam sessions going
on all over the place all day and night. I believe
that many of the old-timers go for the concerts, jams
and friendship. Some of these never went to a class.
In my case I attended most of the classes (I took a
day off to do the Smoky Mountains and avoid Beppi
Gambetta's class) and got a lot from them. I bugged
Steve to do a dobro session a couple times and, now
that he had it, I couldn't attend. Bummer... I also
haven't heard specifics about the sessions but it
looks to be more intensive as Steve only included two
instructors. I suspect it would present opportunities
to dig deeper into the material than possible with a
rotating roster of eight instructors. However, I
might cash in some dusty old pennies from my change
jar and make my way down to Tennessee if he brought in
Mike Auldridge, Uncle Phil, Randy Kohrs or Rob.
I really liked the opportunity to corner an instructor
after class and get up-close answers to questions.
However, in the times that I spent in Maryville, I saw
very few of the instructors participate in an
after-hours jam. Tut Taylor and Norman Blake did
marathon sessions outside the Kamp Store one year and
I did hear stories about great events happening back
at the hotel where the instructors bedded down. I
think that would have improved the experience for me.
Over-all, I thought it was worth every nickle although
be careful of the dorm, I saw a few huge bugs walking
in the halls. Potent bug spray and extra linen are
essential!
