Why not get both then? Check out Janet Davis' at http://www.banjostore.com/
For just a few bucks more than your $600 limit you can get the new Regal
RD-40 in both square neck and round neck.

Well, if you are handy with tools, and need a project, you can do what this
guy from alt.music.guitar.resonator did and buy several.

Hey guys,
I'm what you might call a veteran guitarist, but a total newbie to the
world of resonator guitars.
Well my wife and I ordered a Fullerton resonator from Music123 on a
whim, because we noticed it was crazy cheap (list $349, closeout price
$99) and what the heck, there's a 45 day trial period.
Here's the url for the guitar if anyone's interested:

So I received it yesterday and man I'm loving it's tone for
conventional and slide playing.
Too bad it's unusable due to a severe intonation problem. At the 12th
fret the notes are about a quarter tone sharp!!
I searched this site some and noticed some mention of moving the
biscuit for intonation adjustment.
I see the cone on mine is screwed on, but I've hesitated so far to take
it off as it looks like I may be sending this one back, and I need to
keep it in new condition.
Would anyone care to comment more on this intonation subject and
whether you think I'd have a fighting chance with rectifying the
intonation on this lower end sorta instrument?
Thanx.
