Hi Amy, what I do is take off all strings except one, usually the low
"D" string. This will keep the cone/spider assembly from sliding
around, but also allows me to wipe down the guitar and put a little
polish on without most of the strings in the way. Also, before I put
the ball end into the little slot, I like to bend the string down
slightly about 1/2 inch from the ball. This really helps in keeping it
from popping back out while you thread the plain end through the tuning
machine. Some people use a strip of scotch tape over the tailpiece
slots for the same reason. Also, if you have cats, they will learn the
sound as you rip open the new bag of strings, and come running to
"help" - at least mine do that! ;->
