As far as modifications are concerned, along with the Q-cone, the ebony/maple
inserts and the bone nut, I also "opened" the soundwell. That was crudely
performed with a circular curring device I had with my dremel.  It changed the
sound rather dramatically. The instrument is now noticeably louder. To my ears it
sounds better without the screen holes. (before, with or without the screen holes
made non difference) There is more bass, the guitar sounds less banjo-like.
(thank heavens!) 
 
One funny thing I noticed  while experimenting (now you are going to think I've
gone mad) is that if you put tissues to obstruct the soundholes it filters the
sound and it gives you a Scheerhorn-like bass. I'm not saying that it sounds as
good as a Scheehorn that way but that's what the sound reminded me of. Some
brands sound better than others though ;o) 
 
Has anybody else tried to to something similar?
