Wood that is cut with the growth rings approximately parallel to the face of
the board is plain sawn. Wood that is cut with the growth rings
approximately perpendicular to the face is quarter sawn. It's called
quarter sawn because the log is first cut into quarters and then into
boards.
Bridges should be made from quarter sawn wood for the best sound. Plain
sawn lumber is less expensive.
