I bought a Fender lap steel since I was just starting out and I didn't
want anything too expensive.

The Fender comes with a Tele pickup and gives pretty good sound. My
skills are limited so I can't say it has really been put through its
paces.
My only complaint is the case. Various metal attachments such as the
handle have come loose after what I consider minimal usage. But the
guitar is good and the price seems reasonable at about $350 Canadian, I
imagine that's probably around $200 US. (All I can see on their price
list is a deluxe model at $650 but that can't be what I bought at $350).

Can anyone give me any advice about buying a lap steel--what,where, who
from, used or new?
It'll be for my daughter and will be used on stage, eventually. But,
right now, keepin' the cost down would be a help. I know this ain't
acoustic reso content, so please contact me off list.
The most important thing is honesty. If you can fake that, you've got it
made.
