Hi Kathy,
We fortunate to have a very talented banjo player in Pine Hill Ramblers.
However, sometimes he has a helluva time tuning. He's a "string-bender" type of
player and I'm told he uses very light guage strings, thus adding to the already
tempermental nature of the "banjo beast". Also I recently found out he uses, on
occasion, at least THREE DIFFERENT TUNINGS! Wow! (But I've still NEVER seen him
use a tuner!) We actually arrange our sets around the keys we do the tunes in.
Makes it easier all around. Now I've never played Banjo, nor do I intend
to......so at least this old world is safe from THAT lol. I have however,
especially back in my Pedal Steel days, seen many a musician take an instrument
that was pretty much in tune, and due to being just plain nervous, "tune" the
poor guitar so damn far OUT of tune it was just horrible to try and listen to.
I'm just glad that my "working, out of the house" guitars are both dependable
stable instruments. I did some routine maintenance on Blackie yesterday. She's
starting into her fifth year here, and gets played a lot, and I happened to peek
at her cone at a jam session last Thursday night, (maybe to see if it was still
IN there?), and yikes whatta mess! Dust and crud......hell there was everything
in there but money! This guitar only last weekend (to my ear, and I play mainly
for "me") but this guitar, to me, kept up with all of the others in Jimmy's
Boston Workshop, and this was with this disgusting crud buildup on her cone.
While "Blackie" was apart I really got a first hand look at her carbon fibre rod
brace that Dick DeNeve is currently useing. Impressive!!! I've said before and
I'll repeat, I can almost "feel" the stability of "Blackie" DeNeve when I'm
playing her, compared to the old Sho-Bros, which admittedly are over 30 yrs.
old......... O;-)
"Blackie" is going to the monthly BBU jam at the Groton Stagecoach tonight and
she should be happy after her cleanup.......(I hope).
It's looking like "Sadie" Sho-Bro, who is currently my main festival ( c'mon
boss, lets go aggravate some picking circles) guitar, and "Blackie" who is my
"Richie's getting serious" guitar, will soon be joined by "Sophie" Sho-Bro
who I think I'll set up with a Korg CA 30 probably stuck on the coverplate with
dbl faced tape or velcro, and "Sophie" is gonna have to find a place to "fit in"
as best she can. After her recent "baffling episode", she's developed a sweet,
clear as a bell, voice, altho I feel she still doesn't compare in volume and
projection to her older sister "Sadie".......(yet). I'm the first to know you
can't compare apples to oranges tho.
Richie
