I read an article in Popular Mechanics Magzine (I think) years ago about
getting a stable, solid finish on plywood. The main point of the
article was that since plywood veneers are sliced/peeled off the log and
then unrolled, this puts an unnatural flex in the wood from the start,
making it difficult to prevent those checks from developing in the
finished surface. They seem to ultimately appear as very fine lines or
splits in the painted or varnished coats of most plywood surfaces.
I have often thought that laminate or plywood bodies and tops might thus
be more susceptible to this checking than solid tops, although the solid
tops and backs might be more susceptible to real cracking and splitting
as you described.
