Subject:Re: [RESOGUIT-L] MAS its laminate for Gods sake!

First of all I am not a Beard employee.

But the thing you don't seem to get is that Mike specified that the
MAS be a laminate guitar. That's because he wanted it to sound like
him, which means it has to sound like that buttery sounding Regal
used in the early days of the Seldom Scene. And that Regal like all
early Dobros (and maybe all Dobros) was a laminate guitar. In fact
Mike says that the wood, which is an expensive European birch, is a
very important part of the sound of the guitar.

A lot of people prefer the sound of laminate guitars. When I order my
solid mahogany/rosewood DeNeve, Dick told me that a laminate probably
sounds better - but I am a member of the natural fiber generation and
didn;t pay attention (and would trade that guitar for anything - and
in fact ordered an 8-string built just like it). Also Beard began
building laminates, reportedly at the request of Junior Barber, which
resulted in Poob's BlackBeard, and then a whole line of great
sounding guitars.

In fact when I designed and built my own, I also chose birch
laminates for strength.

Any by the way, laminates are not remarkably cheaper than solid
woods. The solid wood required to make an MAS would probably add at
most $150 to the price and then only if you wanted highly figured
maple or something. But Mike is very particular about the sound and
I doubt he'd let Beard make a solid wood guitar with his name on it.

Incidentally, I believe you can get an MAS in any color or finish.
Black is Mike's personal choice and it looks cool on him.
