Seems like there is some confusion here. Flat top guitar folks generally
agree that a guitar has to have a solid top, spruce or cedar generally.
Otherwise they are considered to be low quality. The sound production starts
with a string on bone driving spruce.
Among reso people, the corresponding issue is the cone, and we generally
like aluminum. And for the rest of the guitar, we don't generally agree on
anything. If you use the same criteria for a reso guitar that you do for a
flat top, your biases are going to match a much smaller portion of the
players/makers than they did in the other guitar group. We all care about
tone, but we are talking about aluminum tone here. A string on wood in cast
aluminum driving an aluminum cone. Most folks on this list would argue that
good sound depends more on that portion of the guitar being set up correctly
than anything else. Some of us probably prefer guitars made of metal or
plastic. Because we can, I guess.
Speaking for myself, I've never heard a MAS. And I don't care at all whether
or not anyone buys them. If laminates don't suit you, buy something else.
But don't expect everyone you speak to to prefer solid wood resos, because
I'd guess the majority have been made from laminates.
