I took Jim McNab's advice and took a look at the JD BB. If the sound is
anywhere similar to what JD did on the song "Lil' RoRo" on "The Best Kept
Secret," JD says "we ran the dobro (D-tuning) through AmpFarm, a ProTools plug-in to
get the slightly distorted dobro sound." JD's entry that McNab referred to is
well worth tracking down. They did all sorts of things to achieve those sounds
on "The Best Kept Secret." OTOH, I too have heard that sizzle on live recording
of AKUS so I wouldn't imagine he's using a ProTools plug-in on that, since that
would probably be applied post-recording. My guess is that he's mixing his mic
with the signal from the instrument's pickup run through an overdrive/distortion
box, lightly applied. But that's just a guess. Cool sound. I've noticed that
his Scheerhorns tend to have a great sizzle naturally, but if what Matt's talking
about is what I'm hearing on other recordings, this goes well beyond that.
Cheers;
Jim N.
