Hi Larry, Stamped cones are made with a two piece die in
a forming press by inserting the blank material probobly
about 15" square into the machine, and the top die which
is a mirror image of the bottom one comes down onto the
material and forms the cone. The excess is trimmed off
after, or possibly at the same time it is formed, depending
on who designed the die.
A spun cone, which most people prefer nowdays is made
in more of a lathe type machine, where the material is
formed by a moveable tool, while the material is rotating.
This process only needs one half of the type of die previously
mentioned as the moveable tool presses the aluminum up
against the form. You can see the lines in the cone.
I just like the tone of the stamped cones. YMMV.
The first thing I am going to do to my new one is get those
stupid D'Addario "FlatTops" (EFT13) strings off it,
they are brand new, and are fully as good as fish line.
Gonna put on some good old Euphonon's..... Jim
