My cheap and nasty Musicians Friend "Rogue" squareneck (runs and ducks for
cover) stripped a gear on the bottom string peg the other day when I was
changing the strings. Replaced the tuners with a pair of generic (the box
has a "K" on it, and has the word JAPAN) three-a-side tuners with metal pegs
(suits the black finish better than the white plastic, I think) and things
are a lot happier now. One problem - the hole was so far towards the end of
the peg that it was halfway into the center of the headstock as it poked
through the slot, and the bottom 056 wouldn't go through the half-hole.
Solved by cutting up an old pick and using it as a shim under the mounting
plate of the machine head assembly.
Actually, it's not a terrible guitar - for the money - but I played a
National 'D' (I think) the other day in a store and it made me realize what
a good reso should be like. I've fooled around with what I can and the sound
is OK, if not world-beating, but until I can persuade my wife that I should
spend serious money on another squareneck, I'm going to have to stick with
this for the moment. My main gripe with the instrument is that the bottom
two strings sound somewhat dull and muffled - even with new EJ42s fitted.
Any way to get a little more twang out of the bottom of a sleeping reso?
Thanks
Hugh
