Steve,
Here's my two cents worth if they're even worth that much.
1. Hand postitions will vary, depending on what you're trying to do. I too
play with hand resting on the arch a lot of times, but the farther way from the
bridge you play, the more mellow the tone, so I also do a lot of picking near the
end of the neck, depending on the song. To play artificial harmonics, you'll be
moving your hand all over the place.
2. Many may disagree with me on this too, but I've moved the spider on my
guitars a bit to line up better with the neck, and haven't noticed any difference
in playability or tone. If you're concerned about it, and the tone is ok where
the spider is, don't mess with it.
3. There's been some debate on the list as to leaving the screen in or
"punching" them out lately. I think the screens help to keep out a lot of
junk (picks, broken beer bottles, etc), but there's debate as to how much volume
they kill, too. For what it's worth, my sound holes are screened.
4. Books and instruction. There's a lot of stuff out there to learn from.
Mike Auldridge is a fantastic teacher and has a pretty good selection of teaching
materials. He can be found at www.mikeauldridge.com. If you live near the DC
area, it would be well worth the time and money for a lesson or two from Mike.
Jimmy Heffernan is also a superb teacher, and holds one and two day "boot
camps" around the country (I'm hosting one here in Connecticut in 2 weeks).
Jimmy's also got a pretty good selection of CDs and DVDs to learn from as well.
He can found at www.jimmyheffernan.com.
Welcome and good luck,
'dude

Hi, all,
New guy here, been lurking for about a week, ever since I ordered my
first dobro. It arrived on Friday, and it is at least as much fun as
I had suspected it would be. I have a few new guy questions, and if
there is a FAQ somewhere that answers them, please direct me there.
Otherwise:
1. What is the generally accepted position of the right hand? I'm
finding I like to rest it on the arch above the bridge, but I don't
want to develop a bad habit, so if this is a real no-no, please
correct me now!
2. The spider is not quite squarely in the hole, that is, it is not
exactly at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. That would seem to lead to
intonation problems. Right or wrong? And if I am right, should I
attempt this fix myself, or is that the ultimate new guy disaster?
3. And why exactly are there screens over the sound holes? Is that
just tradition? I mean, there are three smaller wide open holes there
anyway, so junk is going to get in.
4. What's the best instructional DVD for someone who is not exactly
at ground zero (I've played guitar for 30 years) but is at ground
one, if you get my drift. The instrument came with a book of basics,
so I get the roll, holding the bar, etc. I don't need the baby steps,
but what's good for a toddler?
That's all for now. Thanks in advance.
Steve
