Hi Steve,
I have the Cindy Cashdollar DVD, and have found it useful. I also have a
DVD by Mickey Cochran which while useful has many annoying aspects to
it. The instruction and playing is okay but there are probably better
scripted and edited DVD's out there.
I also play guitar, and am new to the Dobro. As one Dobro beginner to
another, the best advice I can give is to get several hours of lessons
from a real pro. I learned a few things from the DVD's before I went to
my first lesson, and so it wasn't too painful to change some bad habits
that I developed while trying to play above my ability. There is no
substitute for a qualified teacher correcting technique in real time.
You could take a week long class with Rob Ickes and Andy Hall at
Rockygrass Academy in August (www.bluegrass.com). That would be a
serious jump start...
Or, if west Texas in July sounds like fun, CampBluegrass.com offers one
week with Steve Williams. I live in Colorado, and Texas in July wasn't
my idea, but my wife and I will be attending this year. I'm signed up
for guitar, but if anyone has an opinion on the teaching abilities of
Steve Williams, I might switch over to Dobro. Anybody?
