The new Stevens I bought last year is not brass. Under the plating is a
slightly magnetic, fairly hard metal, faintly yellowish in color.

It may be a stainless alloy, or something else. It is a lot harder than brass,
but is not as hard as hardened tool steel by any means.

My old Stevens, 30 + years old, is brass, and still has a good working surface.
The new one came with a number of small nicks under the plating.
