Subject:[RESOGUIT-L] What to Play at a Pizza Party (Was: The Fishin Hole, etc.)
Date:Thursday, April 6, 2006  21:22:42 (-0400)
From:Michael Shannon <mshannon @...net>

On a tangentally related note, my Thursday evening religious ed class (I
teach 7th graders) met this evening for last time this year. The children
turned in their books, and we ordered a bunch of pizzas; I took my Gold
Tone along to play some dinner music, as it were. The kids were fascinated
by this weird looking guitar I had slung across my lap, and they kept
asking me to play something for them to sing along with. But they knew
none of the songs I like to play, and even if I knew how to play that
"American Idol" garbage they all seem to like, I wouldn't want to.

Then I had a flash of inspiration: The Theme from Spiderman! ("Spiderman,
Spiderman, does whatever a spider can", etc.) I learned the song from the
Ramones' recording off a Saturday Morning Cartoon Music album a few years
back. When I took up the dobro, I came up with an arrangement for this
song, including a nice little solo. I played the song, and they loved it!

And a good time was had by all. Including the teacher.

Hi Jim,

The first time I even thought of trying to play the "Flintstone's Theme" on
a reso was when someone on this list mentioned hearing it at a late night
jam session, I think it was at IBMA, and I thought, "why not?" and grabbed
my little practice reso off it's stand and gave it a try. Not too
difficult in open G, once the idea is planted in your head. Back in '79
when you heard that recording you mentioned, I was deep in the C&W barroom
scene, ugh! "The Fishin' Hole" recently discussed is another "wow" tune
for reso-guitar. I just drives home the point that you can play about ANY
thing on one of these "hubcap" thangs......

Now if I can remember to clean up the bottom of this post..... and "cheers"
back atcha Jim,

Richie
