Betty, It's so bizarre to think that somebody even knows of that place, but
you're right - you go right by it on the way to where Rob holds workshops.
Just as a side note, my wife noticed the veggie burgers there too and, since
she doesn't eat meat, that was a plus for her.
As far as technique, Rob was actually very helpful. I'm sure he finds nice
things to say to everybody he teaches and that makes him a very encouraging
instructor. I asked him to watch me play and to critique my playing (but
not as harshly as Simon might!). I did the gamut of hammers, pick offs,
rolls, etc. and I played a little tune that I had learned and then I played
something that I was writing myself. He said that my timing was great and
that the technique was good except for a tendency I had to twist my fingers
at a slight angle on the lowest strings. What I was doing was keeping my
hand more stationary and thus causing my fingers to curl somewhat in order
to pluck the fifth and sixth strings. This was causing my picks to hit the
strings at an angle and that created pick noise. Rob just got me to pay
more attention to that and to really be sure that my picks were contacting
the strings on the fifth and sixth dead on. Basically I just had to loosen
up a bit with the right hand and let it move down a little instead of trying
to keep it more stationary. Allowing the right hand to travel slightly
downward when picking/rolling allows for easier head on picking of those
bass strings. That was really about it. I did some rhythm chopping and
other stuff, but that was the one thing Rob told me to work on.

Puckett's Grocery! A very cool place. I went there with Michael Witcher
and our two German dobro playing friends, Martin Gross and Wolfgang R., on
the way to a R. Ickes workshop. The food makes quite an impression on
anyone new to Southern cooking. I would like to report that this place even
has vegan Boca burgers, should you be so inclined (though I'm pretty sure
I'm the first person they ever cooked one up for...) And Moon Pies are
always in stock there.
So Jim -- want to post a list of all the "wrong" things you were doing, and
what Rob told you to do instead? It would be a public service, I'm sure.
Betty
