In their formative years, everyone in the Scene had a day job, including St.
Mike.
I've gotten some stage time with my 8-string, lately. Coolest bit was
getting mobbed by people asking why I didn't play it last weekend (I had a very
good
excuse: I forgot and left the dang thing at home).
It's too intimidating for many people to rely on it full-time.
