Here's a followup on Brad Harper's message (May 25) about David Richey.
I continue on my quest to (vicariously) try to figure out what it must be like
to be young, talented, and good-looking.
I saw Hit and Run Bluegrass for the first time Saturday evening at the Overton
Bluegrass Festival (about 5 hours northeast of here). Keep your eyes open for
this band -- they're going to take over the world. Five young musicians, and
every one an absolute master of his or her instrument. I hardly know where to
start. I already had Rebecca's solo CD and I had listened to a couple of clips
on their web site, so I knew they were going to be good, and they're just
spectacular in person.
As Brad remarked, David is a left-handed player with a brand-new large-bodied
maple instrument with nontraditional F-holes. It looks like the koa with cedar
top model pictured here, except it's dark, broad-striped maple:

David says he's only had it a few months. David is, as Brad says, plenty ossome.
A little bit of Andy Hall, a little bit of Rob Ickes, a little bit of Brad
Harper himself, all kind of mixed together. And he sings, too! Sings the third
part, and sang lead on one song, doing an superb job. He should sing more
leads, I'm thinking. Dobro pickers singing! Who ever heard of such a thing?
I think David was a bit taken aback by my gushing over his playing, but I asked
him where he learned, and he allowed as how he just "picked it up wherever he
could."
This band is just brilliant. Nobody stands out in this band because they're ALL
outstanding. Rebecca Hoggan is a ferociously good flatpicker who can really
hammer a guitar break. She's also a powerhouse vocalist and, well, pretty
impressive to look at, too. Somehow I came home with more pictures of Rebecca
than anything else. How did that happen? The banjo picker, Lorenzo Gangi, is as
crisp as they come. Mando guy John Frazier is another power picker and writes a
lot of the band's material.
I bought both of their CDs, "Beauty Fades" (2004) and "Without Maps or Charts"
(2005). Both of these feature Todd Livingston, the previous dobro picker (and
another example of the wave of great young dobroists like David). Some great
dobro wrk there.
If you're headed to Telluride this weekend (or Grey Fox in July), make a beeline
for whichever stage they're playing on. For my part, I hope to see them again at
IBMA in September. I guess they won't be showcasing like they did last year, but
I'm sure they'll be in one of the hotel room guerrilla showcases.
