Hugh:  I had a similar experience with my Road-o-phonic.  If I recall
correctly, it also happened twice.  A replacement tailpiece from a different
manufacturer (provided gratis by Paul) solved the problem, which I'm
assuming was a quality control problem in the manufacture of the original
tailpiece.  I don't believe anything you've described in terms of
temperature or humidity would account for the problem.
