In the spring of 1996 Oswald came out to the San Diego
area for the Adams Avenue Roots and Folk Festival. He
was brought out by a school principal in National City
(I forget his name) who was a huge Roy Acuff fan. On
Saturday there was a special event at the school
honoring Oswald. There was a Gibson rep. there and he
presented Oswald with one of these instruments (I
would assume it was #1, but I don't really know.)
Therefore I would say that 1996 was the year that
these first appeared. Before Oswald left he donated it
to the school, where it was put on display. Oswald
performed at this event. I remember that he played
Kansas City Kitty while a school girl in a grass skirt
danced a hula. On Friday he he gave a player's
workshop. I mostly remember the jamming. The afore
mentioned pricipal was singing "Wreck on the Highway"
in one session. Oswald walked up without me noticing
and when it came to the chorus, he let loose with his
tenor harmony and it was almost right in my ear. On
Sunday he performed at the street festival, which is a
free event. Hank Thompson and Rose Maddox were there
as well. It was quite the weekend.
