Hey everyone:
Some of you may remember, back in the time frame of 2000-2003, getting a
free weekly email from Tom Nelson / Dobro Player's Workshops called "Dobro
Lick of the Week." This was a lot of fun -- once a week, a mini-tab of a
dobro lick would show up in your InBox, along with a short explanation of
where someone has used it (e.g., "Al Perkins opens with this lick on 'Back
Street Affair' from John Prine's 'In Spite of Ourselves' CD"), or how you
might use it (e.g., "This is a bluesy sounding phrase that works well as a
fill, but can also add some spice to an otherwise average solo.").
Those of us in Southern California met Tom when he moved here from Illinois
after getting an ALS diagnosis, in order to be near his family. He's
a super nice guy, and it's been a real life lesson to me to watch Tom
continue to be a productive, contributing person even as ALS has stolen
so many of his physical capabilities.
One of Tom's dreams has been to pull together his "Licks of the Week" into
book form, and fortunately, he was able to record them while he still had
the ability to play the dobro. He then spent a very long time getting the
text part of the book ready, and just as an example of the long effort he
put into this, he sent me an email at one point that said, "At my current
rate of blinking I expect to complete the manuscript in about two months."
So the book is now completed: 69 plus licks, in a wire-bound book, plus a
CD with a sound recording of each lick. (Note that the current format of
the CD requires you to play it on your computer, but that shouldn't be a
problem for most people, since it isn't the kind of music CD you would play
in your car on a road trip -- the tracks are very short sound clips that let
you hear how the lick sounds. So it's more of a reference tool.)
Tom is using all proceeds from this book to help people with disabilities
purchase needed equipment and supplies.
How to get one if you're interested: Paul Beard has a supply of these books
in stock, so you can order one from Resophonic Outfitters. The price is
$20, and shipping (assuming this is the only thing in your order) is $4.95.
If you have any questions about this project, please feel free to email me

Thanks,
Betty
