Ken, Joe and Wayne; I have spoken at numerous times about the
talented Joe Smith, who is originally from my part of the country. He
was born and raised in Tremont , PA I had the privilege of being
introduced to Joe by Paul Dankulich ( who is now deceased ) and Dick
Blattenberger who himself is no slouch when it comes to Josh and
Oswald style playing. I think Joe was 16 or 17 when I met him and he
had it all together, the kid could play anything from Oswald to Jerry
Douglas style. about a year and a half after I met him Vern Young was
looking for a Dobro player as Jack Ferguson who was with Vern at the
time had decided to get off the road. Vern was introduced to Joe
under a tree in a field at a venue he was working at in PA and after
listening to him pick a couple tunes hired him on the spot. I think
at the time Joe was 19 or 20. Joe moved to Lamar which is Verns home
location and the rest is history, Joe still works in a local grocery
store as far as I know and because Vern cut back drastically in his
travels a couple years ago Joe had to find some other picking work. I
have spoke with Joes brother and he told me that Joe was working with
some local bands in the Lamar area. If you ever get the opportunity
to see this young man by all means don't pass up the chance. I am
including another web site that has a lot of choices and some good
picking, if you scroll down to "Voices of Lamar" and click on it you
will be able to listen to some more of Joes playing when he was still
with Vern Young. Randy
