Brendan Skwire asked where Sunset Park was: Well I'll try to point
you to where it was located but don't expect to see anything of it.
As you are heading north or south on US 1 you would take the exit for
PA route 796 and head towards Jennersville. When you come to the
traffic light after getting on 796 you go straight through the light,
about a 100-200 yards after you pass through the light the Waltmans'
home was on your right and then the cattle barn and then the fields
used for pasture. about 1/4-1/2 mile there was a driveway off to your
right which was the entrance to Sunset Park, today the Lutheran Home
sits almost where that driveway was located , now nothing is left. I
drove back there about 6 months ago as I heard that the stage was
still there although it had fallen down and was very dilapidated.
Well to my dismay there was nothing left, only condos, malls etc.
all the important things in todays world, sic. Lawrence Waltman and
Sunset Park were driven into oblivion by a group of local politicians
who pressured him because of the parks inadequate treatment of the
outflow from the restroom facilities and I am sure he was getting
pressure on the treatment of animal waste from the dairy farm
operation as well. So the land that at one time held one of the most
revered country music entertainment venues became a victim of
progress, I sometimes refer to it as progress in reverse. I am glad
to be able to say that I had the privilege of seeing some of the last
shows ever to be held there before the great winter storm caused the
spectator roof to collapse in I think 95 or 96 which was the
beginning of the end for Sunset Park.
