Consider this a mini review for the instructional video :)
This is Mike's new instruction DVD introducing the 8 string
resonator guitars to the transitioning 6 string reso player and
the pedal steel player.
The DVD covers the G6, C6 and C9 tunings. The instruction asumes
the player has a foundation in their primary instrument and
relates these tunings to typically the G tuned reso and (in the
case of C9) the E9 pedal steel neck. The audio and video quality
is stellar. Mike uses split screen shots so both hands are up
front. Speaking of palm blocking, it's cool seeing it applied
from a distance of 2 inches. It's also a great lesson for
economy of motion.
The video instruction is almost 2 hours long, split more or less
evenly between the tunings. Mike discusses the rules of the
neck, commonly used patterns and disects one tune per tuning;
G6 Stompin At The savoy
C6 Steelin The Blues
C9 Crazy Arms
As a bonus, the DVD includes the rythmn tracks for all of the
tunes, tuning and string guage tables and lick/scale pattern
charts. All of the "printed" material is also on the disc as
.pdf files so you can copy/download and print from any computer!!!
This great disc is available only from Mike himself. Look for it
at www.mikeauldridge.com
If you are thinking of dipping your toe into the 7/8 string world
of resonator guitars this is the DVD to get.
Two thumbs up (Actually, you'll feel like you have 2 thumbs after
watching Larry the Legend play!)
