I heard this advice years ago and confess to having done this on occasion,
but only because of an irrational prejudice against banjos. ;-)
These days I do sound as well as playing, and I no longer think this is such
a good idea. When you play louder you're likely going to be turned down
anyway, but meanwhile you could be driving your channel into clipping and
producing distortion. And you'll probably lose volume in the monitors,
which are problematic to turn up during a set as the stage is tightly EQ'd
to avoid feedback.
If you feel the need to do this then either a) you need a better sound
engineer, or b) you need to convince your band to leave room for your
instrument.
OTOH, I agree that this list is great. As a beginner I've picked up a lot
of knowledge here, and being somewhat obsessive it is great to read any
discussion of dobros.
