Subject:[RESOGUIT-L] Somuco
Date:Thursday, August 31, 2006  18:36:22 (-0400)
From:Gerry Brown <gerardbrown @.......net>

I attended a guitar show in Charlotte this weekend with an eye toward
finding an old Oahu lap style hawaiian guitar to keep in D tuning. I
think alternate tunings were invented so we would have a good excuse
to go out and buy a new instrument. I found three Oahus in reasonable
condition at reasonable prices and continued to look further. I found
a scrappy looking old beater with the name "somuco" on the head
stock. It was painted with a faux wood grain finish and had an
ivoroid pick guard that partially obscured the sound hole. And the
tone was surprisingly good. It blew away the three Oahus I'd seen
earlier. The guy was asking $75 and took $50 and it included a case.
I changed out the metal nut extender for a bone nut, changed the
strings and removed the pick guard. I'm pretty happy (actually I'm
deliriously happy) with this find but can find no info on the Somuco
company. I did find a Southern Music Company that publishes sheet
music but found no reference to having made or sold instruments. Are
any of you familiar with this outfit?

Gerry
