There is absolutely no need to replace a cone unless it has been
damaged beyond repair, most of the time simply reshaping the cone
edge with your hands is all that is required. While we are here I
will relate a story to you about cones, seems that back in the late
80's I think Oswald needed some work done on his old dobro, I think
Gene Wooten was out of town or unavailable for whatever reason and
Oswald gave it to someone to work on. The individual not
understanding what he was working on said I'll do Oswald a favor and
replace this old cone with a Quarterman cone. Well when Oswald got
his guitar back he almost cried, as soon as Gene Wooten was available
Oswald called him and told him what had happened. Gene went to the
site of the repair shop and ask where Oswalds old cone was, he was
told it was thrown out in the dumpster. Gene dug through that
dumpster found Oswalds old cone reshaped it and reinstalled it and
the rest is history. That old cone is still in Oswalds old Model 27
that Mike Webb now plays and it sounds just as good as ever. So don't
think that your cone needs replacement just because it is 4 years
old, that cone in Oswalds guitar is probably 70 years old or better.
Mike Webb perhaps you can embellish on this a bit as you will know
the intimate details.
