Thanks, Scott. I ended up wrapping duct tape around pliers (didn't have a
nut driver that fit) and was able to get the nut off. Thought that might
loosen things up but it didn't. Once I put it back on it's still way too
tight to adjust by hand. The threads look okay, not like they've been
stripped but maybe the bushing isn't meshed with the nut correctly. Sigh .

It's supposed to adjust but there's a nylon (?) bushing in it that makes it
stay put - it'd try NOT to use pliers if I could help it (it's brass after
all) but if you must, maybe wrap some tape around the nut to protect it
