Gene, I play by ear, alone, also.
And yes, it's my personal experience and belief, the dobro WILL allow you to use
three
finger picks, instead of two.
I use two fingers, for the most part. Sometimes, I'll add an extra pick and
surprise myself
with the sounds, feels, results.
I go back to two . . . because I'm more familiar with that.
Habits, ya know . . . <smile>
I'm not a performer, although I aspire to be one.
And, I think there are things that people can do, in any endeavor, that cuts
across the
established grain . . . so if it behoove's ya, go for it! <grin>
