I don't pick with my ring finger... I strum and/or chop with it. I wore the
backward pick because my finger sometimes get a little sore, but also
because it gave the strum a little crispier sound. I lost my plastic pick
awhile back and have been playing without it recently. But I still strum
and chop with the ring finger. I don't regret using the pick or using the
ring finger the way I do. In fact, I can play and sing with my solo dobro
in a way that aproximates a guitar, which I wouldn't be able to do without
that technique. But the ring finger is involved in my playing only for
purposes
of rythm.
