Can you point us to any more of their playing?
Besides that great work with Red Allen and David Grisman
(Porter Church on banjo)
Craig Wingfield played Dobro on The Charles River Valley Boys
album
"Beatle Country", which has been released, I believe, on
CD. I have it in vinyl.
Kenny Haddock is/was (?) a DC area Dobro player who was seen
at local festivals
such as Berryville. He was credited with playing Dobro on
the Country Gentlemen's
terrific recording of "Two Little Boys"... this was an
interesting cut because it was twangy
and powerful and harking back in a band that was the
beginning of the uptown sound in Bluegrass.
Note: John Duffey was rumored to have played that Dobro
accompaniement on Two Little
Boys, but I believe it was said later that Kenny actually did
it.
Russ Hooper ( russhooper@verizon.net ) is still active in
the Baltimore area. I believe his
most recent work is a collaboration with banjo great Walter
Hensley. Contact Russ for
info regarding his work and availabiltiy of same. We have
some of his stuff and have
played it on ALL RESO RADIO.
and, I should have added Harley Gabbard to the Russ, Kenny &
Craig group. Harley
was a great showman on stage and could do vocal imitations of
Johnny Cash, etc...
he had that Josh swoop (the one Josh used in Salty Dog at the
entrance to his break)
down so when he uncorked it right into the microphone it
sounded like someone fired
pistol near the mic. He'd blow everyone out of their lawn
chairs in the first three rows
from the stage. Harley played in the 70s and 80s with The
Boys from Indiana
