It's ALWAYS the hands of the picker.... Always....
But what I was hoping for was a comment from some on the list that should
know if there were, was, is a tonal difference between a run of the mill
imported chrome plated cover plate and say a Beard Nickel plated brass lyre
cover plate. Different metals and plating make a noticeable difference on
other instruments. Banjos come immediately to mind. Gold vs. nickel vs.
chrome for instance. My gut tells me there is and I was looking for
verification.
I have a really dandy sounding much upgraded Regal RD-45 and was thinking
of swapping out the chinsy chrome plated import with a Nickel plated Brass
one. More for aesthetics than anything else. Nickel will wear gracefully
and gain a nice patina over the years. Whereas chrome.........is just
chrome...
